Boğaziçi University History Department cordially invites you to this year’s Aptullah Kuran Memorial Lecture.

A TALE OF TWO UNIVERSITIES: DOES A UNIVERSITY HAVE A SPIRIT?

Selim Deringil

This lecture is a brief comparative study of the institution and history of two universities: Robert College/Boğaziçi University and Syria Protestant College (SPC)/American University of Beirut (AUB). It is fitting to undertake a study of the history of Boğaziçi University on the occasion of a memorial lecture dedicated to its founding rector Prof. Aptullah Kuran. Another university which has very similar origins and a similar historical trajectory is AUB. The first two American colleges to be instituted outside the United States are Robert College (1863) and SPC (1866). Both have made important contributions to the societies they were in. This lecture will examine their convergent and divergent histories.

The lecture by Selim Deringil will be held in Turkish on 7 April 2022, Thursday - 18:00 (GMT +3)

Live English interpretation will be available via Zoom: bit.ly/3767RYW
