LECTURE ABSTRACT:

A REVOLUTIONARY STORM SPARKED BY THE FALL OF A BUTTERFLY

The formation of a theocratic state in Iran after the 1979 Revolution
has hastened changes within the country, a development with profound
regional and global ramifications. This transformation forcibly entered
all spheres of public and private life with the intention of inventing
formidable hegemonic ‘Muslim’ subjects in Iran. This ecumenical
state project has been sustained over the last four decades through the
coercive rule of ‘theocratic guardianship.’ Yet the overbearing
aspirations of the Islamic State has faced unrelenting challenges by
women, national minorities, students, workers, intellectuals, writers,
pensioners, and political prisoners to avoid a common disintegration of
self and society. The metaphor of ‘fire under the ashes’ captures
the conflict and compliance of people and politics in their encounters
with the Islamic State. The outside world has also (re)examined its
orientalism and racism, though this has mostly remained in the realm of
culture with a focus on and the (re)discovery of the agency and
subjectivity of Muslimhood, in particular in its most representative
form of ‘Muslim womanhood.’

This context frames my personal and intellectual reflection on the
conditions which sparked the revolutionary storm after the fall of a
butterfly: The state murder of a Kurdish woman on September 16, 2022,
that became a global call for Woman, Life, Freedom. I intend to
reintroduce a Marxist feminist historical analysis of people’s
struggle for justice and democracy in Iran in the context of the rise of
capitalism and in recent decades the imperialist wars of destruction
where they have accelerated the rapid decomposition of society and ways
of being not only in Iran but the entire world. I argue that Woman,
Life, Freedom as a call for action implores us to revisit the wretched
junctures of fundamentalism and imperialism that has forged a new global
order since the 1979 Revolution, a connection that has disappeared from
most historicization and theoretical analysis. Unless we struggle
against this disappearance, we lose the prospect of building solidarity
with the frequent revolts and uprisings.
