ABSTRACT:
Hajj across Empires explores the transimperial dimensions of the Meccan pilgrimage, tracing how imperial and colonial forces shaped the movements of South Asian Muslims across the Indian Ocean. This talk will engage with key themes of the book, including mobility, religious networks, imperial anxieties, and the changing meanings of sacred travel between the Mughal, Ottoman, and British empires as they transitioned into the modern era.
